What Was Move 37?
In Game Two of the 2016 historic Go match between AlphaGo (the AI developed by DeepMind) and world champion Lee Sedol, AlphaGo played Move 37—a move so unconventional it appeared almost unthinkable by human standards. It was described as having a mere 1 in 10,000 chance of being played by a professional, yet AlphaGo chose it—and it dramatically shifted the course of the game.
During live commentary, pro player Michael Redmond reacted with astonishment at such a creative, nontraditional move—so much so that Lee Sedol left the room, later spending nearly 15 minutes pondering his response.
The move has since become emblematic of AI's capacity not just to compute, but to innovate—to originate a strategy beyond established human playbooks.
